DAVID A. CALLANAN M.D.-Board Certified Adult and Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist
Background
David Callanan is an Australian born psychiatrist
who founded Child and Family Psychiatric Center
of Southern Oregon in 1997. His central aim is to
bring excellent clinicians from every mental health
discipline together "under one roof". Working
together, with their different experiences and
specialty trainings, this group now delivers the very best of outpatient
mental health care.
Education
Dr Callanan graduated with Honors from the University of Sydney's
Medical School in Australia. He also has a First Class Honors Bachelor of
Science[Medical] degree from the same university. He was the winner
of the Peter Bancroft prize, awarded for the best research thesis
for his work on the control of breathing. He also has a Diploma in Tropical
Medicine and Hygiene from the University of Liverpool, U.K.
When Dr Callanan came to the United States in the mid 1980's, he re-trained as a psychiatrist-
following successful careers in academic neurophysiological research, family practice
and preventive/Wellness medicine. He completed an Adult Psychiatry Residency then a Child/Adolescent
Fellowship at the prestigious Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles,California.
Post-graduate Experience
Immediately before coming to the U.S., Dr Callanan had been the Medical
Director of a Wellness Program at a Health Sciences College in Australia. This experience convinced him
that he wanted to continue with the thrust of preventive medicine by re-training as an Adult and Child/
Adolescent Psychiatrist. After leaving Cedars-Sinai Hospital in 1993, he became Board certified in both
Adult and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry in 1994.
Dr Callanan moved with his wife and kids to the Rogue Valley in 1993. He initially took a position as a Staff
Psychiatrist at Rogue Valley Medical Center then founded Child and Family Psychiatric Center in 1997.
Clinical expertise/Orientation
With his keen interest in neuroscience, Dr Callanan keeps abreast of new developments
in psychiatric medication management of disorders in both kids and adults.
He has also had training in many different types
of counseling or therapy. These include
psychodynamic family therapy, cognitive and solution-focused therapy. He will also
give general advice on healthy nutrition, sleep
and exercise. Dr Callanan is a 'team player' who
likes to get the patient, family and any involved
counselors or physicians working together.
Special clinical interests
First and foremost,Dr Callanan is a general Adult
and Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist who sees many
people with the common mood and anxiety disorders,
school and family problems and A.D.H D.
As a specialist, he also has developed expertise in the treatment of more unusual conditions such as
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Tourette's Disorder, Autism, Asperger's Disorder and Reactive Attachment
Disorder.
Away from work interests
Despite being a 'transplanted' Aussie, David has developed a passionate
interest in American college football. He is an avid runner and recently completed his first marathon-
rather slowly! He also enjoys gardening and landscaping,especially when large rocks need to be moved!
David is an intrepid traveler who has particularly roamed in Asia, Europe, Central America, Australia and
New Zealand.
He is very happily married to his English artist wife, Liz,and has two great adult children who continue to
instruct him on lessons in life! Finally he is lucky enough to also share his life with his Boxer dog, Rubin....
