DAVID A. CALLANAN, M.D.-Board Certified Adult and Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist

David Callanan is an Australian born psychiatrist who founded Child and Family Psychiatric Center of Southern Oregon in 1997 with the central aim of bringing excellent clinicians together "under one roof". Working together, with their different experiences and specialty trainings, the group now delivers the very best of outpatient mental health care.

Dr Callanan graduated with Honors from the University of Sydney's Medical School in Australia. He also has a First Class Honors Bachelor of Science [Medical] degree from the same university. He was the winner of the Peter Bancroft prize, awarded for the best research thesis for his work on the control of breathing. He also has a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the University of Liverpool, U.K.

When Dr Callanan came to the United States in the mid 1980's, he re-trained as a psychiatrist-following successful careers in academic neurophysiological research, family practice and preventive/Wellness medicine. He completed an Adult Psychiatry Residency then a Child/Adolescent Fellowship at the prestigious Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles,California.

Post-graduate Experience

Immediately before coming to the U.S., Dr Callanan had been the Medical Director of a Wellness Program at a Health Sciences College in Australia. This experience convinced him that he wanted to continue with the thrust of preventive medicine by re-training as an Adult and Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist. After leaving Cedars-Sinai Hospital in 1993, he became Board certified in both Adult and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry in 1994.

Dr Callanan moved with his wife and kids to the Rogue Valley in 1993. He initially took a position as a Staff Psychiatrist at Rogue Valley Medical Center then founded Child and Family Psychiatric Center in 1997.

Clinical expertise/Orientation

With his keen interest in neuroscience, Dr Callanan keeps abreast of new developments

in psychiatric medication management of disorders in both kids and adults.

He has also had training in many different types of counseling or therapy. These include

psychodynamic family therapy, cognitive and solution-focused therapy. He will also give general advice on healthy nutrition, sleep and exercise. Dr Callanan is a 'team player' who

likes to get the patient, family and any involved counselors or physicians working together.

Special clinical interests

First and foremost,Dr Callanan is a general Adult and Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist who sees many people with the common mood and anxiety disorders, school and family problems and A.D.H D.

As a specialist, he also has developed expertise in the treatment of more unusual conditions such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Tourette's Disorder, Autism, Asperger's Disorder and Reactive Attachment Disorder.

Away from work interests

Despite being a 'transplanted' Aussie, David has developed a passionate interest in American college football. He is an avid runner and recently completed his first marathon-

rather slowly! He also enjoys gardening and landscaping, especially when large rocks need to be moved!

David is an intrepid traveler who has particularly roamed in Asia, Europe, Central America, Australia and New Zealand.

He is very happily married to his English artist wife, Liz,and has two great adult children who continue to instruct him on lessons in life! Finally he is lucky enough to also share his life with his Boxer dog, Sophie....
